A beginner's guide to source gap analysis in AI search
Use citation rate to find pages that get retrieved but rarely cited — then redesign them like models prefer.
Jan 30 2026
Citations are how publications and brand sites earn credit inside AI answers. Retrieval alone isn't enough — the model can fetch your URL and still never use it.
Four buckets of source performance
- Not retrieved — SEO fundamentals first
- Retrieved but never cited — format and extractability issues
- Retrieved but rarely cited — the gap analysis sweet spot
- Retrieved and cited often — protect and extend
Citation rate benchmarks (directional)
- ChatGPT: aiming above ~2.0 average citations per answer is strong
- Google AI Mode: ~1.1–1.5 is a fair target; the distribution is tighter
- Perplexity: selective — ~1.5–2.0 puts you in rare company
What tends to get cited
On ChatGPT, well-structured listicles covering multiple products often outperform thin single-item reviews. AI Mode leans more toward official product and category pages. Tag prompts by intent so commercial queries aren't mixed with trivia.
Actions for content teams
- Add clear H-tags, bullets, and a summary up top
- Roll single reviews into hub listicles
- Refresh URLs that already get retrieved
- Retest citation rate in Anny after changes
