Why server logs are crucial for AI search strategy

Training, indexing, and retrieval bots each unlock a different visibility layer — logs tell you which ones can reach you.

Log analysis used to be a niche SEO specialty. In AI search it's table stakes: if the wrong bots are blocked, no amount of content polish helps.

Three bot jobs

  • Training bots (e.g. GPTBot, Common Crawl consumers) — shape baseline knowledge
  • Search/indexing bots (e.g. OAI-SearchBot) — put you in the retrieval pool
  • User-query bots (e.g. ChatGPT-User) — fetch a page for a live request

How to read the mix

Healthy patterns show all three types. Check depth — if bots only hit the homepage, internal linking or crawl barriers are hiding the pages you want cited. Pair crawl frequency with citation tracking: often-crawled, rarely-cited URLs are prime optimization candidates — or signs your prompt set is incomplete.

Order of operations

  1. Confirm robots.txt isn't blocking bots you need
  2. Verify training, search, and user-query activity
  3. Diff crawls vs citations in Anny
  4. Only then deep-dive content quality
