# Is Anyone Actually Doing GEO Right, or Is It Just SEO With a New Name?

The question is fair. Much of the advice marketed as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is familiar: publish useful pages, earn links, improve technical accessibility, and answer the questions your audience asks. The overlap with SEO is real, but the answer surface has changed.

Google says its AI features are grounded in the same core Search systems and that there are no special technical requirements or secret markup for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode [1]. But "GEO is not a separate magic ranking system" does not mean "nothing changed."

The practical answer is this: GEO is SEO's shared foundation plus a new visibility problem. In classic search, the primary success event is a click from a result page. In generative search, the system may synthesize an answer from several sources, mention a brand without sending a click, and expose a buyer to a recommendation before the buyer visits any website. The work therefore expands from ranking pages to earning inclusion, accurate representation, and citations inside answers.

## The short answer: GEO is not a new loophole

A useful GEO strategy does not try to "write for the algorithm" by repeating a phrase, hiding an llms.txt file, or generating hundreds of near-identical pages. It makes a company's information easier for both people and retrieval systems to discover, interpret, verify, and cite.

## SEO, AEO, and GEO: how the disciplines fit together

The labels describe overlapping goals, but they are not interchangeable.

- SEO. Primary job: help search engines crawl, understand, and rank useful pages. Typical success signal: impressions, clicks, qualified organic traffic, and conversions.

- AEO. Primary job: structure information so answer systems can extract a direct, complete response. Typical success signal: featured snippets, People Also Ask visibility, answer inclusion, and accurate extracted passages.

- GEO. Primary job: improve a brand's visibility and representation across generative search experiences. Typical success signal: mentions, citations, source share, answer position, sentiment, and influenced outcomes.

AEO is not a license to force every page into a question-and-answer template. It is a useful content-design layer: identify the questions that matter, answer them directly, make the answer self-contained, and then provide the evidence, context, and next step. Google determines whether a page earns a featured snippet; publishers cannot mark a page as a featured snippet or guarantee that outcome [8].

The practical workflow is therefore SEO first, AEO where a direct answer helps, and GEO measurement across the AI surfaces that matter to the audience. Treating the three as separate hacks creates duplicated pages and inconsistent claims.

The distinction matters because AI search is not one product with one index. ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude with web access, and Perplexity can use different retrieval systems, source mixes, query expansion, freshness rules, and answer formats. A page that is visible in one system may be absent from another.

- Can the system find the page? Classic SEO emphasis: crawlability, indexation, internal links. GEO emphasis: the same, plus access for relevant AI search crawlers.

- Can the system understand it? Classic SEO emphasis: clear information architecture and on-page language. GEO emphasis: clear entities, claims, definitions, evidence, and page purpose.

- Will the page be selected? Classic SEO emphasis: ranking and relevance. GEO emphasis: retrieval relevance, source quality, freshness, and citability.

- What is the outcome? Classic SEO emphasis: impression, click, conversion. GEO emphasis: citation, mention, answer position, sentiment, qualified visit, and conversion.

- Where is reputation built? Classic SEO emphasis: links, reviews, brand signals. GEO emphasis: official pages plus independent sources such as editorial sites, communities, reviews, and reference pages.

## What generative search adds to the pipeline

Traditional search can be simplified as crawl, index, rank, click. Generative search often adds several steps: the system interprets a conversational request, expands it into related searches, retrieves candidate sources, synthesizes an answer, and chooses which sources to display as citations.

Google describes this as retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out. Its AI features can issue multiple related searches across subtopics, then use retrieved pages to construct an answer with supporting links [1]. Bing's AI Performance reporting uses the term grounding queries for the phrases used to retrieve content that is later cited in AI-generated answers [4].

This creates three different ways to lose visibility:

1. You are not discoverable. The page cannot be crawled, indexed, or reached through a useful internal link.

1. You are discoverable but not useful to the answer. The page is too generic, ambiguous, outdated, or poorly structured to support a specific claim.

1. You are a candidate but not citable. The system can retrieve the page, but another source is clearer, more authoritative, better supported, or more directly aligned with the question.

GEO is the discipline of reducing all three failure modes. That is why it cannot be reduced to copywriting alone.

## The four parts of a real GEO program

### 1. Build a technically accessible source

Start with the fundamentals. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search to be eligible for supporting links in AI features [2]. Important content should be available as text, crawling should be allowed, pages should load reliably, and internal links should make the site's important topics easy to find.

The ordinary SEO details still matter. Give the page a unique, accurate title, a useful meta description, a stable canonical URL, descriptive internal anchor text, and relevant image alt text. Consolidate duplicate URLs and submit an XML sitemap where appropriate. Validate the rendered page in Search Console rather than assuming that content visible in a browser is equally available to crawlers [9].

Page experience is part of the technical baseline, not a substitute for content quality. Monitor Core Web Vitals, including loading performance, responsiveness, and visual stability. Google's current guidance uses LCP, INP, and CLS as the primary metrics, with recommended thresholds of 2.5 seconds, 200 milliseconds, and 0.1 respectively [10].

Do not confuse access with inclusion. Allowing a crawler does not guarantee a citation. It simply makes the page eligible to be considered.

Crawler policy also has product-specific implications. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT search results, while GPTBot is used for potential training data. The two controls are independent [3]. A publisher can allow search discovery while making a different choice about training access. Review robots.txt, CDN rules, authentication walls, and server logs with those distinctions in mind.

### 2. Publish pages that answer a real information need

The strongest GEO asset is still a strong page. Google's guidance emphasizes original, helpful, people-first content and warns against creating large volumes of pages primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses [1].

For AI retrieval, strong pages have a recognizable information shape:

- They state the answer or definition early.

- They use headings that reflect the questions a reader actually has.

- They separate facts, interpretation, examples, and recommendations.

- They include concrete details that can be quoted or verified.

- They identify dates, scope, assumptions, and limitations.

- They link to primary evidence where a claim needs support.

- They show first-hand experience or a distinctive point of view rather than summarizing common knowledge.

This does not mean every article should be written as a FAQ. It means the page should contain clear, self-contained passages that remain meaningful when a system extracts one section from the whole.

### Make answers extractable without making them thin

For high-value questions, place a concise answer near the relevant heading, then explain the reasoning and limitations below it. Use short paragraphs for definitions, ordered steps for procedures, and tables for comparisons where a table genuinely improves comprehension. Keep the visible answer consistent with the title, metadata, structured data, and any product information elsewhere on the site.

Do not hide essential meaning in images, accordions that are inaccessible to crawlers, or vague marketing language. Do not add a FAQ section merely to capture more queries. The purpose of answer-friendly formatting is to reduce ambiguity for readers and systems while preserving enough context to prevent a technically correct excerpt from becoming misleading.

### Make trust visible

Google's people-first guidance asks whether content demonstrates first-hand experience, has a clear site purpose, identifies who created it, and gives readers enough information to trust it [11]. Add an accurate author or reviewer byline when readers would reasonably want to know who wrote or checked the piece. Link the byline to a relevant author or company profile. State the publication or update date honestly, and disclose material use of automation when readers would reasonably wonder how the content was produced.

For claims that can affect money, safety, health, or business decisions, raise the evidence standard. Cite primary sources, distinguish observed results from hypotheses, and state limitations. Trust is not created by adding an "E-E-A-T" label to a page; it is demonstrated through the people, evidence, experience, and accountability behind the page.

### 3. Earn corroboration beyond your own domain

AI answers often rely on more than a company's official website. Depending on the query, systems may draw from news, reviews, communities, video, reference sites, and comparison pages. This makes off-site representation part of GEO.

The goal is not to manufacture mentions. It is to make the public record accurate and useful. Keep product facts consistent across profiles. Correct outdated descriptions. Contribute genuinely to communities rather than inserting promotional replies. Encourage customers to describe real experiences in their own words. Pursue independent coverage when the company has something genuinely newsworthy. If a brand is absent from the sources that AI systems already use for a category, changing one landing page will not solve the entire visibility problem.

### 4. Measure the answer, not only the visit

A GEO measurement system should start with the customer journey, not a list of random prompts. Build prompt clusters around discovery, comparison, problem-solving, alternatives, implementation, and purchase intent. Include the language customers use, the category terms they use, and the competitors they name.

Track each model or surface separately. At minimum, record:

- Brand visibility. What it tells you: whether the brand appears in relevant answers. Important limitation: a mention can be positive, neutral, or negative.

- Citation share. What it tells you: how often your pages are used as sources. Important limitation: it is not the same as a traditional ranking position.

- Answer position. What it tells you: where the brand or source appears in the response. Important limitation: position can vary across runs and query wording.

- Sentiment or framing. What it tells you: how the system describes the brand. Important limitation: automated sentiment needs human review for important decisions.

- Source gap. What it tells you: which sources are cited when your site is not. Important limitation: the gap is a research input, not a guaranteed link opportunity.

- Grounding query. What it tells you: which retrieval phrases preceded citation. Important limitation: available data is often sampled and surface-specific.

- Qualified outcomes. What it tells you: visits, sign-ups, demos, and revenue influenced by AI discovery. Important limitation: many exposures will remain unclicked and hard to attribute.

Bing's AI Performance reporting exposes total citations, cited pages, grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends across supported AI experiences [4]. Google Search Console now provides dedicated generative-AI performance reports for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative-AI features in Discover. The reports include impressions, pages, countries, devices for Search, and time-based trends [12]. These tools are useful, but they should complement a controlled prompt set and analytics, not replace them.

## What not to mistake for GEO

Several popular tactics are either overstated or misapplied.

There is no universal AI schema. Google explicitly says there is no special schema.org markup required for AI Overviews or AI Mode [2]. Structured data can help search engines understand a page and may enable rich results, but it must match visible content and should not be treated as a citation switch [5].

llms.txt is not a visibility guarantee. A machine-readable file may be useful for some agent workflows, but publishing one does not replace crawlability, indexation, clear pages, evidence, or third-party credibility.

Prompt stuffing is not demand research. A long list of invented prompts can create an impressive spreadsheet while saying little about customer behavior. Prompt coverage should come from sales calls, support tickets, site search, product analytics, customer interviews, and real category questions.

AI-generated volume is not authority. Google's policy is about the purpose and quality of content, not whether a human or AI typed every sentence. Using AI as an assistant can be reasonable; using it to mass-produce pages primarily to manipulate rankings violates Google's spam guidance [6].

A citation is not a win by itself. A brand can be cited in a negative comparison, a low-intent answer, or an outdated passage. Review the full response, the cited passage, the competing sources, and the resulting business outcome.

A featured snippet is not a guaranteed deliverable. Answer-focused formatting can make a page easier to understand and extract, but Google chooses featured snippets algorithmically and provides no publisher markup that guarantees one [8].

## A practical 90-day GEO operating plan

Days 1-30: establish the baseline. Select the customer journeys that matter most. Build prompt clusters for each journey. Run them across the major surfaces relevant to your audience. Record mentions, citations, competitors, source domains, answer position, sentiment, and obvious factual errors. Audit indexability, robots.txt, internal links, templates, canonical URLs, titles, snippets, image accessibility, Core Web Vitals, and page freshness.

Days 31-60: improve the source set. Upgrade the pages that should answer the highest-value questions. Add original examples, precise definitions, supporting evidence, comparison criteria, limitations, and visible dates. Consolidate overlapping pages. Fix inconsistent company facts across owned profiles. Identify third-party source gaps and pursue legitimate ways to improve coverage.

Days 61-90: test and iterate. Re-run the same prompt set so the comparison is meaningful. Separate improvements to retrieval from improvements to framing. Watch which pages gain citations and which grounding queries appear. Test whether better visibility produces qualified visits, sign-ups, demos, or sales. Keep a change log because AI answers are probabilistic and systems change over time.

## The conclusion

The useful answer is: GEO is partly SEO, but it is not only SEO. The technical foundation remains shared because AI search still depends heavily on crawling, indexing, relevance, quality, and links. The new layer is the answer surface: systems retrieve multiple sources, synthesize claims, choose citations, and shape a buyer's understanding before a click happens.

Doing GEO right means treating AI visibility as a measurable combination of technical access, distinctive content, corroborated reputation, model-specific monitoring, and honest iteration. The best practice is not to chase a loophole. It is to become the clearest, most reliable, and most useful source for the questions your market is already asking.

That is the difference between adding a GEO label to an old checklist and building a real AI search strategy.

## Pre-publication checklist

Before publishing, confirm that the page has one clear audience and purpose, a descriptive title and meta description, a stable URL, an accurate byline and date, a direct answer to the primary question, supporting evidence, useful internal and external links, accessible text and images, valid structured data that matches visible content, and no duplicated or contradictory versions elsewhere on the site. After publishing, inspect the URL, submit or refresh the sitemap if needed, monitor indexing and Search Console performance, and record meaningful content changes for the next comparison.
